The smooth chow is a very good watchdog, is a livelier dog than the
ruff specie and shows more specie and shows more sociability towards other kinds
of dogs. He can be trained to some sort of obedience and agility.
He is a fine dog for children, though he sets the rules for the playtime. As
a fine rule for owner of chows: fence your garden and always walk your dog in a
line, because he is so curious. If he finds something very exciting
he will go for it and ignore your call.
It is obvious to me why the smooth chow is so much nicer than the ruff, the
coat is so easy to handle, ten minutes and you have a nice combed dog. The
smooth has another advantage compared to the ruffs he changes his fur much
earlier and I have seen 4-months-puppies with mature coat. Though he has the
same woolly hair as the ruff chow and changes
it twice a year it is still so very easy to comb.
